[LMGlobal.Org] In this poignant presentation, Shi Qingying, a student from Huzhou University (China), pays tribute to the quiet but profound legacy of Professor Wang Mingzhen (1906–2010), a pioneer whose research in noise theory and electronic physics laid the groundwork for modern radar and communications technology.
Qingying’s presentation, titled “Silent Pioneering, Bright Future: The Inspiring Life of Wang Mingzhen,” explores Professor Wang’s journey from a time when education was considered “unnecessary” for women to her becoming the first female professor in the Department of Physics at Tsinghua University. Beyond her technical achievements at the MIT Radiation Laboratory, Qingying highlights Professor Wang’s extraordinary humility—choosing to forgo high academic ranks to focus entirely on the success of her students. This address serves as a powerful reminder that gender should never be a barrier to ambition and that the courage to “shine in one’s own way” is the ultimate catalyst for progress in STEM.

Silent Pioneering – Bright Future –The Inspiring Life of Wang Mingzhen

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
I am Shi Qingying from Huzhou University.
On this International ICTs for Girls Day, I would like to share the story of a woman who never sought the spotlight, yet quietly opened the door of science for many who came after her.Not through fame. Not through power. But through persistence.
Her name is Wang Mingzhen.

Wang Mingzhen lived in a time when girls were told that education was unnecessary, even improper. Many people—even her own family—believed that a woman’s virtue lay in ignorance. But she refused to accept that fate. She fought, again and again, for the right to learn. And once she gained that chance, she held onto it with everything she had.

After completing her studies in China, she went to the United States and earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan. Later, she joined the Radiation Laboratory at MIT, where she focused on noise theory and electronic physics. In a field overwhelmingly dominated by men, and as one of the very few Asian women, she distinguished herself through her ability and determination. While facing doubt and isolation, she remained unwavering–immersed in experiments and committed to solving fundamental problems in electronic noise and signal transmission.

Her research laid important foundations for radar technology and modern communications. The stable networks, reliable devices, and seamless connections we rely on today are, in part, built upon the groundwork she helped establish.

Yet her greatest decision was not where she succeeded, but where she chose to belong.
At a time when she could have stayed abroad and enjoyed far better conditions, she returned to China without hesitation. In 1955, she became the first female professor in the Department of Physics at Tsinghua University.

Then, despite being awarded a higher academic rank, she voluntarily requested a lower one–so she could devote herself more fully to teaching.

No pursuit of status. No attachment to recognition. Only dedication to her students.
For the rest of her life, she devoted herself to teaching, training generations of scientists and engineers, and contributing everything she knew to the development of science and education in her country.
She had no children of her own, yet her students were everywhere.
She lived quietly, yet her influence endures.

From her, I have learned that where we begin does not define where we can go; that the limits placed upon us are not always the ones we must accept; and that gender should never be a barrier to ambition.
We may not always be fearless.
But we can choose to be brave.
Brave enough to persist. Brave enough to believe. And brave enough to keep going.

Today, as we mark this special occasion, may every girl, every woman–indeed, everyone–carry that same strength within and find the courage to shine in their own way.
Let us move forward–steadily, bravely, and without doubt—and turn what we believe into who we become.
