OVERVIEW

[LMGlobal.Org – New York] The 8th session of the Compulsory Peace & ICTs Education Campaign of the Light Millennium’s, held in support of the International Girls in ICT Day on April 25, 2026. The session featured opening remarks from Rene Robinson and Professor Alev Taşkın, followed by a keynote address from Roser Almenar on AI and space technologies for girls. This particular campaign organized in support of International Girls in ICT Day, served as a global catalyst for the Pact for the Future and the #UN100 vision.

By positioning technological literacy as a fundamental human right rather than an elective privilege, the campaign advocates for the systemic integration of ICT and AI literacy into core global curricula (K–12). This program bridges the mandates of SDG-4 (Quality Education), SDG-5 (Gender Equality), SDG-9 (Industry and Innovation), and SDG-16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).

This virtual program included a youth-led panel which was consistent with nine youth/student presenters where they presented profiles of pioneering women in STEM fields, including Dr. Gladys West, Prof. Dr. Samahat Geldiay, Dilhan Ege Eryurt, Dr. Muthayya Vanitha, Prof. Wang Mingzhen, Prof. Lu Yutong, Neha Sharma, Prof. Canan Dağdeviren, and Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson. The youth panelists shared their experiences and insights about women’s contributions to science and technology, with presentations covering topics from supercomputing to space exploration. The session also included a presentation about Turkey’s revolutionary village institutes educational model from Buket Şahin, which highlighted the country’s early efforts in equal and technical education for girls. The conversation ended with a discussion from Gökşen Altuntaş Şen, data analyst, who contributed about women in AI and technology, in particular, from the private sector perspective. She emphasized the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping the future of technology. The session’s Concluding Remarks was delivered by Ambassador Rodrigo A. Carazo, who has been supporting the campaign since its initial introduction in 2024. Further, Prof. Ning and Ms. Jelena Komitas shared their reflections.

Further, the event featured a “living mosaic” of intergenerational voices from six countries (China, Costa Rica, India, Spain, USA, and Türkiye), successfully bridging the historical legacy of the Turkish Village Institutes with the forward-looking mandates of the Pact for the Future. The session organized in collaboration with the international members of the Coalition for the #8 session of the Compulsory Peace & ICTs Education campaign, this campaign continues to build a global movement to ensure that ICT and AI literacy become a cornerstone of education worldwide.

Opening Remarks-I
Miss Renee Robinson, Freshman in the Science and Engineering Program at Manalapan High School, USA.
Title: “Standing with Strength: Gladys West’s Life in STEM”
Dr. Gladys B. West was a monumental figure—one of only four African-American workers at her base and the second Black woman hired there. As a “human computer,” West performed precise calculations for projects like the Seasat Altimetry project, which created the framework for the GPS systems we rely on today. Despite her contributions remaining unnoticed for nearly 60 years, West’s yearning for knowledge never ended; at age 70, she earned her doctorate in public administration. Dr. West demonstrated that there is no barrier that prevents achievement if you work hard. When no one offered her a seat at the table, she built her own. As she once said, we must encourage our youth to pursue higher education so they will be equipped to change the world.

Title: From Academic to Industry: The Rising Power of Women in ICT
“Globally, girls‘ access to primary education has increased significantly, yet we do not see that same picture in professional life. Worldwide, women in STEM remain at 30%, and only 22.7% of ICT graduates in OECD countries are women. The statistics for industry are even more dramatic: in AI, only 22% are women, and in patent innovation, a mere 9%. In Turkey, while women represent 30–35% of engineering students, their participation in the workforce often falls below 20%. Behind these challenges, however, is a story of progress: at the PhD level in Turkish engineering tracks, female participation reaches 39%. The issue isn’t just access; it is about sustainable career paths and visibility. We must move beyond stereotypes. As Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said, ‘Everything we see in the world is the creative work of women.'”

As we open this session, we recognize that the future of technology is not a distant goal, but a landscape being shaped today. Our opening speakers set the stage by honoring those who paved the way—the pioneers whose resilience turned “impossible” calculations into the foundational technologies of our modern world.

Keynote Address
Speaker: Ms. Roser Almenar, PhD., Candidate in AI & Space Law, University of Valencia in Spain;
Member, ITU Secretary General’s Youth Advisory Board, Representing EU.
Title: Dream, Connect, Belong: AI and Space Technologies for Every Girl

This day is about technology, but more importantly, it is about possibility. I reflect on three powerful ideas: Dream, Connect, and Belong. Technology is developed by people who started exactly where you are now—with curiosity. My journey as a PhD candidate in AI and Space Law did not begin with certainty; it began with asking questions. The future of technology does not require perfection; it requires imagination.

Key Insights from the Keynote: The Convergence of AI and Space: Ms. Almenar emphasized that we are witnessing a vital evolution where Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites form the “body” of a global network, while AI acts as the “brain,” optimizing data flows to reach the 2.6 billion people who remain offline. This convergence is not just an industrial trend—it is a moral imperative for global healthcare, education, and economic independence.
Redefining Leadership through Courage: Addressing the “Belonging” pillar, Ms. Almenar spoke to the reality of often being the youngest woman in high-level rooms. She defined leadership not by experience alone, but by the courage to speak, question, and persist. She challenged the youth to recognize that their unique perspectives are not merely “diverse additions” to a room, but critical components for solving complex, global challenges.
From Consumer to Architect: A major takeaway was the call for a mindset shift. She urged young women to move beyond being passive consumers of digital content to becoming the active architects of our digital future. She reminded participants that technology is a construct that we have the power to design, shape, and govern.
Ms. Almenar encouraged girls further by saying, “You do not have to wait to grow up to make an impact. The future is not something we simply step into; it is something we build.“

Miss Bharathi Senthilkumar (India)
Affiliation: Bachelor of Engineering – BE Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Madras Institute of Technology; The Institution of Green Engineers, India.
• Presented Pioneer: Neha Sharma, Director at Samsung R&D.
• Presentation Title: Architecting the Invisible: Neha Sharma and the Roadmap to 6G Connectivity.
• Summary: Bharathi’s presentation served as a technical bridge from current 5G standards to the future 6G landscape. She highlighted Neha Sharma’s journey from Punjab Engineering College to leading critical R&D at Samsung. Bharathi argued that 6G is a fundamental shift toward an “AI-native network” where connectivity becomes a cognitive environment rather than just a tool. She emphasized Sharma’s work on AI-native networks and sustainable spectrum use, framing connectivity as a necessary human right to equalize global opportunity.

Miss Duru Sert (USA)
Affiliation: Student, Woodson High School; Ataturk Society of America, USA.
• Presented Pioneer: Prof. Dr. Semahat Geldiay (Türkiye).
• Presentation Title: A Pioneer Lighting the Path for Girls in STEM: Prof. Dr. Semahat Geldiay.
Summary: Duru profiled Prof. Dr. Semahat Geldiay, a trailblazing Turkish zoologist and academic. Duru recounted how Prof. Geldiay overcame the significant gender barriers of the 1940s and 50s to establish advanced scientific research and the Zoology Department at Ege University. Duru highlighted Prof. Geldiay’s pioneering use of electron microscopy to identify the “cerebral neurohemal organ,” proving that neuro-hormones control biological behaviors. Duru noted, “Her legacy demonstrates that progress in STEM is gradual and is driven by those who challenge limitations and expand opportunities for others“.

Miss Fang Yitong (China)
Affiliation: Student, Tianhua College, Shanghai Normal University, China.
• Presented Pioneer: Lu Yutong, Chair of the International Supercomputing Conference.
• Presentation Title: She Powers the Future: The Hidden Force Behind Supercomputing.
Summary: Fang introduced Lu Yu-tong, a core developer of China’s “Tianhe” supercomputer series and the first female chair of the International Supercomputing Conference. Fang emphasized Lu’s “low-key and pragmatic” dedication to applying high-performance computing to aerospace, AI, and climate simulation. Fang’s narrative focused on how Lu Yutong’s leadership proves that “gender is never a barrier to pursuing excellence in science and technology,” and that technology should be endowed with “warmth and responsibility“.

Miss Julia Khabinskiy (USA)
Affiliation: 11th-grade student, Science and Engineering Program, Manalapan High School, USA.

• Presentation Title: What has STEM Taught Me? Girls Belong in It.
Summary: Julia shared her personal journey from an initial interest in robotics to building a cost-effective robotic hand using flex sensors. She drew meaningful parallels between her own prototype design failures and the persistence of Dr. Gladys B. West. Julia reflected on how Dr. West’s legacy served as a compass for her own studies, noting: “Failure is a part of the process… Dr. West’s legacy shows that women can be just as great at STEM as men are.” She encouraged peers to persist through challenges, highlighting that her hands-on engagement with robotics has empowered her to see herself as a future innovator capable of changing the world.

Miss Lalin Hasoğlu (USA)
Affiliation: Junior at the Taft School in Watertown & New York Ataturk School, USA.
• Presented Pioneer: Prof. Canan Dağdeviren (MIT, USA/Türkiye).
• Presentation Title: Canan Dağdeviren: Turkish Academic, Physicist, Material Scientist and Associate Professor at MIT.
• Summary: Lalin presented the work of Prof. Canan Dağdeviren, who leads the Conformable Decoders research group at the MIT Media Lab. Lalin highlighted Dağdeviren’s inventions, such as the conformable ultrasound patch for early cancer detection and facial movement trackers for ALS patients. Lalin drew a personal connection to Dağdeviren’s resilience, noting that Dağdeviren’s work is driven by passion and the desire to prevent others from feeling pain. She described Dağdeviren as a global inspiration, recently recognized by the UN as a likely Nobel Prize contender.

• Presented Pioneer: Prof. Dilhan Ege Eryurt (Türkiye)
• Presentation Title: Dilhan Ege Eryurt: A Trailblazer for Turkish Women in Astrophysics
Summary: Lara presented the story of Prof. Dilhan Ege Eryurt, a pioneer who advanced the study of stellar evolution in the mid-20th century. Lara emphasized how Eryurt overcame both gender discrimination—where women were often relegated to support roles—and a lack of resources in Turkey at the time. Lara noted that Eryurt’s contributions to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center were vital to the Apollo missions. Lara poignantly reflected on the progress of women in Turkish academia, noting that while Eryurt paved the way, the journey toward complete equality in high-level leadership continues. Lara concluded that Eryurt remains a “huge role model for young Turkish girls who want to take a step into STEM.

Miss Sharmila Devi RK (India)

Presented Pioneer: Dr. Muthayya Vanita (India)
• Presentation Title: Dr. Muthayya Vanita: The Force Behind Chandrayaan
• Summary: Sharmila profiled Dr. Muthayya Vanita, the Project Director of India’s second lunar mission, Chandrayaan. Sharmila shared how learning about a woman leading a major Indian lunar mission acted as a catalyst for her own academic ambitions. She highlighted Dr. Vanita’s dedication to handling the extreme pressure of space missions and her reputation as a skilled electrical engineer. Sharmila emphasized that Dr. Vanita’s legacy is not just technical but inspirational: “She showed that leadership and innovation are not limited by gender.” Sharmila stated that this research has reinforced her own commitment to contribute to science and society.

Miss Shi Qinying (China)
Affiliation: Junior, School of Foreign Languages, Huzhou Normal University, China.
• Presented Pioneer: Wang Mingzhen (China)
• Presentation Title: Silent Pioneering, Bright Future: The Inspiring Life of Wang Mingzhen
Summary: Shi Qinying introduced the life of Wang Mingzhen, a physicist who faced immense societal pressure in early 20th-century China to abandon her education. Shi detailed Wang’s journey to the University of Michigan for her PhD and her subsequent work at the MIT Radiation Laboratory, which laid foundational groundwork for radar technology. Shi movingly highlighted Wang’s decision to return to China in 1955 to become the first female professor in the Department of Physics at Tsinghua University. Shi concluded that Wang’s life, characterized by “no pursuit of status or attachment to recognition, only dedication to her students,” serves as an enduring model of bravery and intellectual integrity for all girls.

Miss Sinem Gül (Türkiye)

• Presented Pioneer: Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson (USA)
• Presentation Title: Not Meant to Belong: Moving Through the System, Not Around It
Summary: Sinem presented the formidable career of Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, the first Black woman to earn a PhD in physics from MIT. Sinem focused not just on Jackson’s scientific achievements—which supported the principles behind touch-tone phones, fiber optics, and caller ID—but on her strategic mindset. Sinem argued that Jackson’s greatest strength was her ability to “understand a system so well that you can redirect it.” Sinem concluded with a powerful lesson: “Real impact is not only about creating innovations; it’s about deciding how those innovations are used, who benefits from them, and how far they spread.“

With the foundation laid by our pioneers, we turn to the horizon of the digital future. Our keynote address shifts the focus from what has been achieved to what can be dreamt. It is a reminder that in an era of AI and space-tech convergence, the act of “belonging” in the STEM community is an essential act of global citizenship.

From Roots to the Modern Frontier
Education does not exist in a vacuum; it is shaped by the lessons of history and the demands of the private sector. The following section draws on the “inspiration roots” of the Turkish Village Institutes—a revolution in gender equality and technical literacy—and brings that wisdom into dialogue with the modern demands of artificial intelligence and professional career sustainability.

Panelist Perspectives
Ms. Buket Şahin, Author & Freelance Documentary Producer, Türkiye/USA.
Topic: Ataturk’s Village Institutes: A Revolution in Education Buket Şahin opened with a poignant tribute to her father, Osman Şahin—a shepherd from a family of thirteen children who, without the Village Institutes, would never have realized his potential. She shared his story of rising from a barefoot village child to a prolific author of 29 published books. Buket detailed how the Village Institutes, which operated from 1940 until their effective curtailment in 1946 and official closure in 1954, produced nearly 4,000 female graduates who defied the era’s expectations to become teachers, doctors, and engineers, transforming the nation. She framed the institutes as a “great awakening” for Türkiye and a model of gender equality that was a physical requirement. Connecting this history to your vision, Buket noted: “If the Village Institutes were still operating today, Türkiye would surely be a different country. But as Bircan always says, ‘Hope never fades.'” Her presentation highlighted how these institutes serve as the inspirational roots for the Compulsory Peace & ICTs Education campaign, re-envisioning the V.I. legacy as a requirement for the global, digital needs of the 21st century.

Ms. Gökşen Altuntaş Şen
Affiliation: Data Office Manager, Doğuş Technology, Türkiye.Türkiye
Topic: Women Coding the Future: New Horizons with Artificial Intelligence
Drawing on nearly two decades of experience at the intersection of AI and digital transformation, Gökşen Altuntaş Şen provided a data-driven perspective from the private sector. She challenged the industry to look beyond the code, stating: “Technology is not only about writing code; it is about designing the future, and this is ultimately about people.” Gökşen identified a critical “sustainability gap” in Turkey, noting that while women are well-represented in STEM education, they often face structural barriers in the workforce. She cautioned that by excluding half of humanity from the design process, we risk building a future that is “abided, incomplete, and less innovative.” Her presentation served as a call to action for the private sector to move beyond diversity quotas and create environments where women can thrive and lead in the AI-driven era.

Closing Reflections
The closing of the session featured profound contributions from esteemed guests:

Reaffirming his commitment to the vision, the Ambassador underscored the importance of the “return of talents” and the necessity of building an inclusive base for the upcoming technological transformation. He expressed his confidence that the youth voices heard during the session would be the leaders the world relies on in 20 years.



• Professor Ning (China): Commended the session for building an “inclusive global platform” and lauded the youth presenters for their courage and passion, reinforcing the vital role of the #UN100 and Girls in ICT Day initiatives.



• Keynote Speaker Roser Alminar (Spain): Concluded the event by reflecting on the diverse cohort of voices, noting that the presentations proved these young women are the “leaders of tomorrow.“

Conclusion
This session served as a global catalyst, bridging the historical legacy of the 20th-century Turkish Village Institutes with the cutting-edge requirements of the 21st-century digital landscape. By honoring pioneer icons alongside contemporary innovators, we dismantled the myth that technology is a male-dominated domain. Our youth panelists demonstrated that when young women are equipped with technical agency, they move beyond being passive consumers to becoming architects of 6G connectivity, ethical AI systems, and sustainable social infrastructure.

Achieving true parity demands more than academic inclusion; it requires dismantling structural barriers in the private sector to ensure that women are not merely present in STEM, but are leading as decision-makers. As we continue our advocacy to reinstate the core philosophies of the Village Institutes—adapted for a modern, digital-first world—this session serves as a definitive call to action: to provide the sustainable career paths, mentorship, and inclusive educational infrastructure necessary for young women to innovate.

As the processor of this vision at The Light Millennium, we conclude that the future is a reality to be built. We move forward with the collective mandate to “Dream, Connect, and Belong,” transforming technology into an essential vehicle for sustainable development, ethical innovation, and global peace.

Engagement: The session drew significant global interest, with 105 registered participants from 22 countries. Throughout the two-and-a-half-hour program, a dedicated group of nearly 60 participants remained for the duration of the dialogue, reflecting a deep, sustained commitment to our vision despite varying time zones and prior professional commitments. The session for the eight campaign of the #CompulsoryPeaceICTsEdu was directed and chaired by Bircan Ünver, LMGlobal.Org.

Achievement of Campaign Objectives: This session has successfully realized its core objective: to catalyze a global intergenerational dialogue that repositions ICT and AI literacy as an essential human right. By documenting the legacies of global women pioneers through our youth-led profiles and bridging these historical foundations with the modern needs of the Pact for the Future, we have effectively moved from awareness to actionable advocacy. The session has created a permanent knowledge hub for youth, educators, and policy-makers, fulfilling the foundational goals of the #8 Compulsory Peace & ICTs Education campaign.

Looking Ahead: The next Campaign #9 of #CompulsoryPeaceICTsEdu, building on this momentum, The Light Millennium Global is pleased to announce the next phase of our journey. Our 9th campaign session will be held in support of the International Day of Non-Violence (October 2nd), which is scheduled for Saturday, the 3rd of October 2026. This upcoming initiative will further integrate the “Compulsory Peace & ICTs Education” framework with global peace-building efforts, continuing our Coalition‘s commitment to systemic educational change. We invite all partners, schools, and NGO networks to join us as we continue to build this global vision.

A Global Mandate for Change
As we conclude, we look beyond the speeches and the data to the mandate that unites us. The closing reflections remind us that the work of bridging the digital divide is an intergenerational responsibility. We carry the lessons of the past and the energy of the youth into a future where technology is a vehicle for peace.
