The Wound Where Light Enters
An Evening Inspired by Rumi, with Music, Poetry, and Live Art
New York, NY — On Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 PM, the Office of the Arts at Hunter College presents The Wound Where Light Enters at the Kaye Playhouse—an immersive, multidisciplinary performance inspired by the poetry and life of the 13th-century Persian mystic Jalal al-Din Rumi.
Blending live music, spoken word, dance, visual art, and theatrical storytelling, the evening traces Rumi’s transformative encounters with Attar and Shams of Tabriz. Through four evocative scenes—prophecy, encounter, loss, and awakening—the performance explores timeless themes of displacement, grief, resilience, and renewal.
The program features Hunter artists alongside internationally acclaimed performers, including members of the Silkroad Ensemble, live visual artist Kevork Mourad, and percussionist Shane Shanahan. They are joined by a remarkable ensemble led by cellist Rubin Kodheli, with Miranda Cuckson and Holly Workman (violins), Milan Milisavljević (viola), Margaret Cox (bass), and Eren Erdogan (kaval and ney), creating a rich and dynamic blend of musical traditions and artistic voices.
The evening continues with powerful instrumental works by leading contemporary Persian composers, including Hossein Alizadeh‘s beloved Ney Nava, performed for ney and string ensemble.
The Wound Where Light Enters offers a moving, sensory experience—where music, image, and poetry come together to illuminate the enduring search for meaning, connection, and home.
