“Empowering youth to co-create the future is not an empty slogan“

Distinguished colleagues, and friends, Good morning.

[LMGlobal.Org] Before we dive into the core discussion, I’d like to share a personal practice experience that deeply shaped my understanding of today’s theme. Recently, I guided a group of students to participate in a short video competition themed “Lighting Up the Future: The Energy Revolution.” Through their lenses, I witnessed a remarkable scene of coexistence: under photovoltaic panels, fish swam freely in the water, crops thrived in greenhouses, and clean electricity was continuously generated overhead. We also visited an integrated smart public transport charging station for light, storage, and charging, where green energy is injecting new vitality into urban mobility. This experience made me realize that empowering youth to co-create the future is not an empty slogan—it requires a holistic support system. Today, I want to explore this system through three interconnected dimensions, which together form the scientific core of reimagining our learning ecosystem.

When we talk about “empowering youth to co-create the future,” a fundamental question must be answered: Where exactly do we empower them? And what kind of future are we co-creating?

“True empowerment happens in the neural connections of young minds”

Today, I propose a three-dimensional framework: True empowerment happens in the neural connections of young minds, in their digital toolkits, and in their understanding of the interconnected web of life. Together, these dimensions form the scientific core of what we call “shaping inclusive education through peace education and digital technology.”

First Dimension: Neuroscience — The Biological Basis of Peace and Co-creation
Peace, empathy, and cooperation are not just moral appeals—they are first and foremost biological possibilities.

Modern neuroscience teaches us that the human brain possesses lifelong “neuroplasticity”—the ability to reshape its neural connections through learning and experience. This means that when we engage young people in social-emotional learning, conflict resolution training, or collaborative projects (like the energy revolution video my students worked on), we are physically shaping their brains—particularly the prefrontal cortex, the region responsible for decision-making, empathy, and emotional regulation.

A classic study found that adolescents who underwent systematic empathy training showed significantly enhanced activity in the brain networks associated with perspective-taking. This proves that peace and collaboration are not abstract ideals—they are physiological traits that can be wired into our neural circuits. When my students collaborated on the energy video, they had to constantly communicate, negotiate perspectives, and integrate different expertise, which essentially helped them build healthier, more resilient “brain hardware” for collaboration. This is where empowerment truly begins.

Second Dimension: Educational Technology — The Tool Revolution for Empowerment
Yet, ideas alone cannot achieve change at scale. This is where digital technology becomes revolutionary—it translates the principles of neuroscience into tangible, interactive, and personalized learning experiences, and amplifies the collaborative power of youth like my students.

Imagine:
Virtual Reality allowing a youth who has never left their hometown to “stand” in a renewable energy farm or a refugee community thousands of miles away, personally experiencing the complexity of global challenges—thereby cultivating deep empathy through immersion, directly engaging the “neuroplasticity” we just described.

AI-driven adaptive learning platforms acting like patient mentors, tailoring unique social-emotional growth and academic paths for every young person, based on their individual neural responses and learning styles.

Global collaboration tools enabling youth worldwide to co-create solutions in real-time—just like my students collaborated on their video, but on a global scale—whether for clean energy projects, community mediation, or climate action.

Technology is the “accelerator” that moves peace education and collaborative learning from theory to practice. It makes brain-based empowerment accessible, scalable, and borderless.

Third Dimension: Ecological Education — Systems Thinking for Purposeful Co-creation
But tools and individual change are not enough. The future we are co-creating is a complex, interconnected world. This requires the third dimension: Ecological Education, which is essentially systems thinking in action.

Ecological education goes far beyond environmental protection. At its core, it teaches youth to understand that society, technology, economy, and nature form a constantly interacting web of life. When my students studied the “photovoltaic + fishery-light complementarity” and “photovoltaic + agriculture-light complementarity” models, they didn’t just learn about technology—they learned to see the systemic connections between energy production, food security, and environmental protection. This is the essence of systems thinking.

Integrating this mindset into our educational ecosystem means:
The “peace” we pursue expands from interpersonal peace, to social peace (fair institutions), to human-technology peace (ethical innovation), and ultimately to peace between humanity and the Earth (sustainable coexistence).

Young people learn that resolving a community conflict or designing a renewable energy project requires considering systemic factors like resource distribution, historical contexts, and long-term environmental impacts—just as my students had to balance technical accuracy, artistic expression, and ecological value in their video creation.

Ecological education gives youth a complete “map of the world.” It helps them see that every action they take will ripple through this delicate network, ensuring their co-creation is purposeful and sustainable.

Friends, let us connect these three dimensions into a cohesive ecosystem:
Neuroscience tells us that youth can be empowered—their brains are wired for peace, learning, and collaboration, as evidenced by my students’ growth through the video project.
Educational Technology provides the means—turning that innate potential into global, scalable practice.

Ecological Education defines the direction and vision—enabling youth to act as responsible systems creators, not just passive participants.

Therefore, what we are advocating today is far more than adding another subject to the curriculum. We are calling for an integrated learning ecosystem that combines brain-based teaching principles, cutting-edge digital tools, and ecological systems thinking. As educators, it’s our mission to build this ecosystem—integrating these elements into our daily practice to nurture youth who can understand themselves, leverage tools, and perceive the whole.

Only then can we truly equip the next generation with an unprecedented capacity: the ability to collaborate across boundaries, innovate ethically, and co-create solutions that benefit both humanity and the planet. They will not merely be inheritors of our future—they will become co-architects of tomorrow, equipped with scientific literacy, technological fluency, and systemic wisdom.

This integrated ecosystem is the most profound empowerment we can offer the next generation, and it is the foundation for building a more peaceful, sustainable, and inclusive world.
