Drops of Hope

[#JUCAwards2025] “Let not a single drop of water that comes from the sky be wasted without any use”
These were the words of King Parakramabahu the Great. one of the most powerful kings during the Polonnaruwa kingdom of Sri Lanka. The idea was to protect and conserve each and every drop of water that fell from the sky. Understanding the value of even the tiniest globule of water the kings and queens in ancient Sri Lanka did an immense service, conserving water in Sri Lanka by building humongous canals and tanks that holds gallons of it.

The question is why? Water is a resource that covers about 71% of the earths surface. So, if there is so much water on earth why conserve these tiny drops that fall of the sky?

The riposte is simple. Among this 71% its only 1% of it that’s suitable for the uses and the necessities of humanity. Most of the water on earth blogs to glaciers and the ocean.Thus, identifying our place within the creations of mother nature helps us understand who we are what we should do to really survive.

Water is the source to all life. It’s the driving force that holds the supremacy of furnishing the existence of living beings. From plants, to animals, to micro-organisms, each and every mortal being live, fed from the hands of water. It is an agent that gives hope throughout the circle of life. Hence, protecting the water resources in the world is not just conserving water; its conserving lives. It’s protecting the existence of the living. It is necessary to understand that these two components are not too different from each other as the water cycle and the life cycle should both be considered as one. It’s a right of every single living creature in the world to equip and use water for themselves. But to what extent?

We humans are the most intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom. Mankind is a creation of mother nature that exceeds the imagination. This allows us to think more, and logically analyze. Hence, we are using our full capacity to cross the limits and create what once was once thought to be impossible, come to reality. However, with this limitless creativity and intelligence, we forget to repay and secure the fundamentals that keep us living. We have forgotten to show gratitude towards mother nature; hence, we destroy the very things that helps our existence. Water has acquired the same faith. We have forgotten the services that water provides us and through every step of our evolution we have unknowingly destroyed our water resources through pollution. This not only disrupts the human existence but it catastrophically disrupts the ecosystem and all the living in it. We should understand that we do not own the earth to begin with. The earth owns us. Its true that we truly have no limit to what we can achieve but with achieving these goals we have set it is important to protect the surrounding resources. Thus, we should conserve and protect water through all our actions.

The major reason for the degradation of water sources in the world is pollution. Each second that passes brings more and more pollution to water bodies on earth. Examples for this can be seen in rivers like Ganges river in India, the Yellow river in China and many other water bodies which are losing its cleanliness day by day resulting in a huge loss of habitat, scarcity of clean water for human needs and massive destruction to ecosystems. The solution for pollution is at the edge of our tongue yet once again we forget to care. By creating more healthier disposal methods, using the 3R system and through many other methods we can solve pollution. For that each citizen from each country must act accordingly. There are various other threats to water sources like global warming, climate change, urbanization; to resolve all these problematic situations is to use our brilliant minds to reverse these difficulties. Using scientific solutions and logically thinking through the problem will result in a much quicker resolution for these massive hindrances faced bu water bases in the world. Together we can protect the water sources of the world, not as different countries, but as one nation named earth where all humans work together to protect these water bodies.

Every living organism from the living giants like forests to the tiny cells which are the structural unit of life requires water. Each one of them holds equal rights on their needs of water. Hence there is an interconnection between the cycle of water and the cycle of life. Its because of the presence of trees that transpiration occurs where water vapor produced in photosynthesis is emitted out through the leaves helping in the formation of clouds in the atmosphere and it’s the existence of water that allows the tree to live. In more such ways, the water cycle is known to be connected with the life cycle thus proving that the Water Cycle and the Life Cycle is one. Our duty as the consumers of water is to secure the water we have, preventing water pollution and creating a sustainable environment where water is a clean and free for both animals and mankind. Neglecting this matter only results in unsanitary water conditions, starvation, droughts and epidemics which will eventually lead to the extinction of the human race.

Just as French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker and author, Jacques Cousteau said,
“We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one.”

The interconnection between the water cycle and life cycle is as a shadow to a body, inseparable. A better developed world not only consists of massive technology and huge skyscrapers. Its should be a world consisting of both human development and environmental development in equilibrium. While the material world gets developed so should the environment and resources like water should be conserved both for human consumption and animal life. It is our duty as the most intelligent creature in the animal kingdom to protect these resources not only for ourselves but also for animal life. This is where sustainable development jumps in as it helps to conserve these resources, enrich human development with the development of the material world. Under the 6th goal on sustainable development by the United nations, it is to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. By introducing sustainable management of water, it will not only be beneficial to the human race but also the animal kingdom. This will eradicate water poverty, impurity of drinking water and give out clean and fresh water to everyone irrespective of their priorities while also providing sustainable living to the environment.

Water is a sacred resource; each drop of water is limited and important. It is the responsibility of humanity to protect it. Each globule of water contains the very essence for the existence of life on our blue planet, hence, protect and conserve even the bits of it we have to ourselves. Water is a beacon of hope that shows that life will exist and for its immense service of preserving life we must not forget that the Water Cycle and the Life Cycle are nothing but one.
