BACKGROUND:
[LMGlobal.Org] The Light Millennium Global proudly presented a virtual panel on Artificial Intelligence (AI), titled, “How Artificial Intelligence Impacts Today’s Society“, which is rapidly transforming our world, impacting everything from everyday life to everything we do, communicate, and education to transportation and communication, and from babies, and children to those over 80-90 years old, which impacts directly and indirectly throughout cross-sections of all generations. While AI offers immense potential for positive change, it’s crucial to acknowledge and address potential risks.
This international virtual panel has consisted of representatives from experts in the field including academicians, researchers, the private sector, and youth who brought out to the surface both the benefits and risks of AI’s impact in today’s world and toward shaping a safeguarded and inspiring future.
In this line, the organization achieved its initial goal by contributing towards the #UNGA79’s dedication theme, Summit of the Future #SOTF, along with closing the mega gap in #DigitalLiteracy.

Executive Summary:

The international panel discussed the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on society, with a focus on its potential benefits and risks, and the need for responsible AI development. The panelists also explored the implications of AI on national sovereignty, digital carbon footprints, and the labor market, emphasizing the importance of considering the potential harm to children and the need for universal guidelines to protect morality and ethics in decision-making processes. 
The concept of the panel led by Prof. Victor B. Lawrence on behalf of the LMGlobal.Org.

Summary of the Panel:

The meeting was about an international panel discussion on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on society. The panel was part of the UN’s 79 General Assembly Summit of the Future and was organized by the Light Millennium Global, in collaboration with several institutions. The discussion aimed to understand AI’s benefits and risks, and how to leverage them to shape a safer and inspiring future. The panelists discussed the potential impact of AI on various industries and society, including education, arts, healthcare, and robotics. They highlighted the need for strong government regulation to counter the negative impacts of AI and the importance of considering the potential harm to children. They also stressed the need for universal guidelines to protect morality and ethics in decision-making processes and the importance of humanity remaining grounded in the natural world as the digital world advances.

The Opening Remarks of the session were delivered by Prof. VICTOR B. LAWRENCE, Director of the Center for Intelligent Networked Systems (iNetS), and former Associate Dean and Bachelor Chair Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology (New Jersey); Secretary General, LMGlobal.Org, USA.
Prof. Lawrence set the stage for the larger panel discussion. He outlined the profound impact artificial intelligence (AI) was expected to have on society, influencing areas like medicine, engineering, science, and entertainment, as well as daily life and work. Prof. Lawrence emphasized AI’s potential to enhance productivity across professions, from lawyers and doctors to software developers, and its ability to contribute to economic growth by increasing GDP and lowering inflation.
However, he also warned of the potential risks AI posed, such as the creation of fake content and price manipulation, calling for strong government regulation to address these challenges. Acknowledging that AI could not be uninvented, Prof. Lawrence stressed the importance of managing it responsibly. He expressed hope that the panel would generate valuable insights on steering AI’s development for the benefit of society.

• Professor (ret)  ROBERT HARARI, Music Producer, Sound Designer, Artistic Director, and Researcher; former Director of the Music & Technology Program – School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken-New Jersey, USA.

Speech Title: “A Pendulum Swing – The process of A.I. integration in a Human World”

In his keynote address, Professor Harrari discussed the historical pattern of new technologies initially causing fear before leading to innovation and new opportunities. He highlighted that AI is currently in the “mad rush” phase of development, with significant investments from both governments and industries. While AI offers exciting advancements, it also poses risks, including ethical dilemmas and potential harm, especially in areas like education and creative industries.

Harrari stressed the importance of integrating AI responsibly, balancing its benefits with its challenges. He emphasized the need for universal guidelines to ensure AI serves humanity positively, while also maintaining human connection and ethical standards as the technology continues to evolve.

Speech Title: “Balancing Sovereignties in the Digital Age”

Paul Mikov discussed the implications of AI on nation-states and their relationships, emphasizing the need for urgent multi-stakeholder cooperation across domains. He highlighted the shift in the concept of sovereignty due to the digital age, where data transcends national boundaries and citizens’ personal profiles are shaped by globalized multinational corporations. Paul also discussed the ownership and control of digital platforms and information technology ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of data in AI models. He concluded by urging the global south to consider asserting greater national and supranational digital sovereignty arrangements to manage potential risks to their political and national sovereignty.

Presentation Title: “Impact of AI- Today’s World (Digital Carbon FootPrints)”

Professor Geetha discussed AI’s role in simulating human intelligence, learning from data, and correcting mistakes. She explained data collection, processing, and using deep learning to improve results. Geetha highlighted AI types like narrow AI, general AI, and applications in natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. She emphasized considering AI’s ethical implications, including bias, fairness, transparency, and privacy concerns. Geetha also discussed reducing digital carbon footprints through energy-efficient hardware, optimizing data centers, and responsible disposal.

Speech Title: “A Human Values Framework for Managing AI Development”

Chip Carter discussed the implications of smartphone usage and its potential parallels with the development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He emphasized the importance of understanding the potential benefits and detriments of AI and the need for a human values-based framework for decision-making. Chip also highlighted the importance of humility, curiosity, openness, and resilience in the face of AI’s unpredictability. He stressed the need for agility and flexibility in shaping preventative and curative measures for AI’s impacts. Chip discussed three principles related to the impact of technology on society, and the need for human values to guide technology development. He advocated for a “do no harm” approach to technology development, emphasizing the importance of clear values and goals to prevent unnecessary harm to humans and the planet.

Speech Title: “Machine Learning / Artificial Neural Networks: Data-Driven Statistical Model Approximation”

Professor Ali Akansu discussed the evolution of jobs and the impact of AI on the labor market, emphasizing the need for efficiency and the exploitation of redundancy to improve efficiency. He also touched on the concept of digital twins, a technology that is evolving alongside machine learning and AI. Ali highlighted the importance of inclusive growth and education in achieving fairness and peace.

Speech Title: “AI Enabled Research Methods“

Professor S. Radha Rammohan discussed the impact of AI on SDGs, particularly SDG 11 and SDG 13. Professor Rammohan highlighted the applications of machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing in various sectors, including decision-making, resource optimization, and sentiment analysis. They emphasized the potential of these technologies to contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and improve human health and safety. The professor also discussed the importance of achieving SDGs through various means such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, water quality monitoring, research applications, sustainable agriculture, healthcare, education, and online education. They concluded by emphasizing the need for further research and studies towards achieving SDG goals.

• Mr. PIYUSH MALIK, Founder, The Digital Agenda ( former CDO, CTO, ex IBM, ex PWC).

Speech Title: “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence: An Industry Practitioner’s Perspective”

Mr. Piyush Malik traced the evolution of data analysis and AI, highlighting its journey from early data collection to modern-day advancements. He emphasized how pivotal moments, such as the development of the Colossus machine during WWII and the early AI research by IBM, have shaped today’s technologies. Malik noted that while generative AI seems new, its roots go back to the 1950s, with significant milestones like IBM Watson and early AI systems like Eliza.

He discussed the rapid adoption of generative AI and its transformative impact on various fields, including disaster response, healthcare, and productivity. However, Malik also addressed the challenges and risks associated with AI, such as privacy concerns, deep fakes, and ethical issues. He underscored the need for responsible AI use, proper regulations, and societal adaptation to ensure AI benefits humanity while mitigating potential harms.

Speech Title: “We turn to technology to solve important problems. AI in Society: Transparent Design for Well-being”

Ms. Katherine Grace August, PhD, emphasized the critical role of standards in advancing technology for sustainable and inclusive development. Highlighting the historical evolution of data and technology, she discussed how standards can facilitate the development and deployment of technology in a way that is accessible and beneficial to all, including those with varying abilities. She stressed the importance of integrating accessibility from the outset and using AI to improve outcomes across sectors like healthcare. August also addressed the need for greater involvement in standards development and the continuous learning required to bridge gaps in STEM education and mitigate biases in technology applications.

Speech Title: “How AI Impacts Today’s Society: BetterFutureLabs“

Justin Trugman discussed the current state and future potential of AI. He introduced the Gaia benchmark, which compares AI performance to human capabilities on tedious tasks. While humans excel with a 92% success rate, cutting-edge AI systems like Civil and Autogen score significantly lower, with even well-known models like GPT-4 scoring poorly on complex tasks. Jargman predicted that AI will drive a major workforce shift, similar to past revolutions such as the agricultural and industrial eras. He highlighted the impact of AI on professions like photography, using AI tools to create professional headshots as an example of how AI is reshaping job roles and industries.

Prof. Yang Jianchu discussed the profound impact of AI on productivity and education, alongside its risks such as job displacement and privacy concerns. He emphasized the need for global collaboration in AI governance to address these challenges effectively. Highlighting China’s commitment to AI innovation and data privacy, he introduced the Global AI Governance Initiative as a means to foster international cooperation and shared governance.

Speech Title: “Exploring the Evolution of Data Ownership and Privacy in the Digital Age”

Mr. Bryan Kyritz addressed the pressing issue of data ownership and privacy in the context of AI and blockchain technologies. He highlighted the challenge faced by AI companies in sourcing quality data and the ethical concerns arising from using data created by artists and authors without adequate compensation. He introduced the intersection of blockchain and AI as a solution for maintaining data ownership and ensuring that creators are fairly compensated while retaining control over their data. He emphasized the potential of this paradigm shift to reshape digital privacy and data management, particularly in sensitive fields like health data and scientific research.

Mr. P.S. Krishna discussed the pervasive influence of AI on various facets of society, emphasizing its role in enhancing communication, productivity, and creativity. He highlighted practical applications of AI tools, such as GPT models for productivity, AI-driven presentation generators, and voice recognition technologies. He also addressed the ethical considerations associated with AI, including data privacy, job displacement, and the need for skilled professionals. Mr. Krishna concluded by underscoring the transformative potential of AI while stressing the importance of ethical implementation and the need for continued innovation and adaptation in the field.

• Ms. VRUSHALI GAIKWAD, MS in Computer Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, USA.; Software Developer at Warner Bros Discovery

Speech Title: “IMPACT OF AI in Healthcare”

Ms. Vrushali Gaikwad, highlights key AI applications such as predictive analysis, remote monitoring, and innovative technologies. She explained how machine learning and deep learning, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), are used for analyzing medical images and performing predictive analysis on patient data. Remote monitoring technologies, including smartwatches and fitness trackers, help detect abnormalities and alert users and healthcare providers. She also introduced “Dot Pads,” an AI-driven technology for visually impaired individuals that creates tactile graphics from images. Looking ahead, Ms. Gaikwad discussed advancements in AI for predictive analysis, real-time predictions, mental health applications, and robotic surgery, while acknowledging challenges such as data security, ethical concerns, and high costs. She encouraged students and young engineers to enhance their AI skills, develop new technologies, and make a positive impact in the tech industry.

Mr. Jai Bohra addressed the audience by reflecting on the profound impact of AI on human civilization. He began by comparing the potential destructiveness of AI to the atom bomb, questioning whether we would have allowed its invention had we known its full implications. Mr. Bohra emphasized that our understanding of AI’s consequences is limited, as highlighted by Professor Chip Carter’s point about the unknowns in AI development. He noted that historically, societal functions and innovations have been driven by human thought and action. However, AI is set to replace many of these functions, shifting control from humans to machines. Mr. Bohra expressed concerns about this shift, suggesting that while AI promises creative outputs and complex problem-solving beyond human capability, it also carries significant risks and uncertainties. He underscored that AI, like a double-edged sword, could pose dangers even when its potential benefits are acknowledged.

The session received over 300 registrations based in the U.S. India, Africa, and different parts of the world.
