[LMGlobal.Org] The virtual panel titled “How Can We Prevent Harmful Consequences from ICTs, and Move Towards a Sustainable Future?”  was organized and presented by The Light Millennium Global through diverse multi-disciplined speakers from academia, NGOs/CSOs, experts, activists, private sector, and youth representatives on May 7, 2024. 
The panel has brought up to the surface both existing and potential harms of ICTs, along with recommendations for solutions. 
The concept was initially developed and proposed in connection with the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference‘s Theme #3, “Science, Technology and Innovation and Digital Cooperation“ in particular, with its ‘Technology and Innovation and Digital Cooperation” aspects, along with the theme #4, “Youth and Future Generations” since the youth populations are both the core users, and leaders of tomorrow, and being the leaders of today; shaping most ICT companies and related innovative technologies.

The high-speed expansion of AI presented risks and threats, and how to minimize them.

Ladies and gentlemen, a warm welcome to every one of you. Today, as we come together in this esteemed gathering, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to address such a distinguished audience. In the time we share here, I aim to explore the profound implications of the high-speed expansion of artificial intelligence and the imperative of minimizing its accompanying risks and threats.

Nazım Hikmet’s poem “I Want To Be Mechanized” (1923), which we listened to at the beginning of the panel, contains lines from nearly 100 years ago, but its echoes continue to shape today’s world. We live in a world where mechanization has developed and made our lives easier. But today I want to direct our focus to a topic that is critical to our future: artificial intelligence (AI). As we find ourselves on the threshold of an era marked by the unprecedented expansion of artificial intelligence, it is important to address its impact on our future, and today I will talk about how we can reduce the negative effects of artificial intelligence.

The most striking difference between last year and now lies in the growth trajectory of artificial intelligence. We can now perform tasks that we used to do on our own quickly and easily with artificial intelligence. While this rapid progress offers many opportunities and conveniences, it also brings with it important risks and challenges that we need to pay attention to. Therefore, it is clear that we need to control the use and spread of artificial intelligence by taking some measures to protect our future.

Blessed with extraordinary technology, we have the power to shape the world that awaits us. As architects of our destiny, we must approach the use of technology seriously and with foresight. So how can we control this artificial intelligence and stay one step ahead? This is the most important question and problem at hand. With the proliferation of AI technology comes a multitude of risks, from workforce displacement to concerns about data privacy, algorithmic bias, and security. But perhaps the most frightening situation is the emergence of unforeseen threats that escape our current awareness.

In light of these challenges, I propose the development of protocols that regulate the use of artificial intelligence. Protocol creation requires the establishment and implementation of specific rules, standards, and guidelines; this is a strategic approach to mitigating risks in the field of artificial intelligence. The first step in this effort is the correct identification of risks; because a comprehensive understanding is indispensable for designing effective solutions.

We must then proceed with the creation and implementation of protocols. These protocols serve as a framework for establishing rules and standards that govern the development, deployment, and use of AI technology. We can ensure that artificial intelligence is used ethically and responsibly by creating protocols that address issues such as data use, privacy, and security. Moreover, the universality of these protocols promotes collaboration between institutions and individuals in different countries, supporting globally acceptable norms for the use of artificial intelligence.

Social participation and transparency are at the heart of the protocol creation process. By taking into account the perspectives of different stakeholders and transparently conducting transactions, we can achieve wider acceptance of protocols. Moreover, it is imperative to constantly improve and update these protocols to keep up with technological advances; This ensures that artificial intelligence technology evolves with changing needs and risks. Given AI’s reliance on data, protocols can further strengthen the framework by establishing standards for its use and sharing.

As we face an unpredictable future, the power to shape it is entirely in our hands. By taking timely measures to keep AI under control, we can turn this scenario into a catalyst for positive change and harness our collective potential for the good of humanity. Therefore, I call on all individuals and nations who are wary of the potential threats posed by artificial intelligence to come together and collaboratively design transparent protocols. Through this concerted effort, we can effectively manage the growth of AI and ensure that its power serves as a force for good rather than a threat. Instead of letting this power overshadow us, let’s use it judiciously and build the world of tomorrow.
