[Draft] DESCRIPTION / CONCEPT:

[LMGlobal.Org] The virtual panel titled “How Can We Prevent Harmful Consequences from ICTs, and Move Towards a Sustainable Future?”, which is scheduled for May 7, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. EST. The panel aims to bring up to the surface both existing and potential harms of ICTs. In connection with the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference‘s Theme #3, “Science, Technology and Innovation and Digital Cooperation“; in particular, with its ‘Technology and Innovation and Digital Cooperation” aspects, along with the theme #4, “Youth and Future Generations” since they are both the core users, and leaders of tomorrow, and being the leaders of today; shaping most ICT companies and related innovative technologies.

The concept will be unfolded/illustrated through esteemed international academicians, NGO representatives, and youth focusing on the below-listed critical points along with recommendations toward needed user-protective responsible, and accountable global policies and protocols. These include digital cooperation for eliminating and preventing such harms; as well as educating and warning users at large for a safer and sustainable future in both real life and digital.

THE MOST COMMON ICT HARMS ARE AS FOLLOW:

Hate speech, discrimination (social media), troll accounts, disinformation/misinformation, the influence of fake news, lobbyists/big money controlling most things (inconvenient truth), health-related causes, digital gambling, illicit weapons, drug and organ trafficking, abusive misleading software programs/sites that target children, girls, and women in connection with the existence of the dark web and its produced harms and threats; fake cryptocurrency, all forms of illicit money transfers, etc. along with high risks for hacking and organized cyber crimes, how to prevent from the risk and threats of AI technologies, and more…

HOW TO USE ICT’s FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE?

All of the above negative effects and impacts of ICT on sustainability demand a need for a digital detox as a part of ever-increasing living online; including how to educate families toward eliminating babies’ and young children’s usage of cell phones/iPads, and how to implement preventable measures and place as part of K12 education and free accessible knowledge for all including on the usage of AI technologies, social media, and beyond… toward a safer, better, healthier and sustainable future…

THE VIRTUAL PANEL PROMISES TO DELIVER THE FOLLOWING:

Our esteemed panelists will offer recommendations, innovative, inclusive and impactful approaches, as well as preventable measures for users, youth, and families based on illustrated issues with relevant strategy and policy recommendations on how to prevent existing and/or potential future harms toward a “Sustainable Future”. 

OPENING OF THE PANEL:

The panel will open with a piano piece titled, “I Want To Be Mechanized” based on a poem written in 1923 by renowned Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet, along with a presentation on the harms of technology focusing on sound, “how sound of technology we indirectly hear affect our health and quality of life”, which will be incorporated into the panel discussion from philosophical and aesthetic approaches as well.

Along with the #2024UNCSC, this panel also aims to support the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (A/RES/60/252) (May 17).

The proposed main 3 messages or session outcomes:

• The esteemed panelists will offer recommendations, inclusive and impactful approaches, as well as preventable measures for users, youth, and families based on illustrated issues with relevant strategy and policy recommendations on, ‘how to prevent existing and/or potential future harms toward a Sustainable Future’. 

• Bringing multi-stakeholders such as NGOs, academia, private sector, and various fields together including youth/students for the first time toward a better understanding of the multi-facet aspects of the issue and potential further collaboration. 

• Informal education/awareness of the general public toward preventing them from the harms of ICTs through the session, web stream, posted presentations, and produced videos based on the session.
