The 2023 J.U.C. Awards – Overall Excellence: Muhammet Ali Turan

Below is Mr. Turan’s brief delivered speech during the “Hope Never Fades” book-launching event at the 40th TÜYAP İstanbul Book Fair on November 3, 2023.

The 17 Goals set by the United Nations in 2015 were implemented in our country almost 100 years ago under Atatürk’s leadership.

I think this project [J.U.C. Awards] achieved its aim, and I’m happy to contribute to this wonderful project.

Today, while technology, economy, and living standards are improving day by day, women are still discriminated against because of their gender in some places in the world. 

Access to electricity and clean water is still limited in some regions. 

And there are many more humanity problems. 

In order to solve these problems, the United Nations announced 17 goals in 2015. Reforms with the same main idea as these goals had already begun 100 years ago by Atatürk, the founding leader of Turkey.

I participated in the competition in the essay category, and the subject of my writing was the comparison between Atatürk’s reforms in the first 10 years of the Turkish Republic and the 17 goals of the United Nations for 2030.

The United Nations has 17 goals such as ending hunger, gender equality, access to water, and so on. 

We all know how important these goals are for humanity. 

The topic I chose, particularly focusing on Atatürk and the environment, captivated my interest, and as I wrote, I saw how visionary a leader Atatürk was. In my writing, I tried to provide numerous examples to highlight the similarities. 

I awarded that the 17 goals set by the United Nations in 2015 were implemented in our country almost 100 years ago under Atatürk’s leadership.

I hope that my writing will help people to be more aware of the fact that we are very fortunate to have a leader like Atatürk, and good people in authority who want to help the world.

I hope my essay fosters environmental awareness in society and allows us to experience the joy of having such a valuable leader as Atatürk once again. Before I finish my speech, I want to thank everyone who contributed to the project, especially Ms. Bircan Ünver. I also want to congratulate the participants who achieved distinctions. “Merhaba ben Ankara Şehit Velit Bekdaş Anadolu Lisesi’nden Muhammet Ali Turan.

Bu projenin amacına ulaştığını düşünüyorum ve bu harika projeye katkıda bulunmaktan mutluluk duyuyorum.

Teknolojinin, ekonominin ve yaşam standartlarının her geçen gün geliştiği günümüzde, dünyanın bazı yerlerinde kadınlar hala cinsiyetlerinden dolayı ayrımcılığa maruz kalıyor.

Bazı bölgelerde elektriğe ve temiz suya erişim hâlâ sınırlı.

Ve daha birçok insani sorun var.

Bu sorunların çözümü için Birleşmiş Milletler 2015 yılında 17 hedef açıkladı. Bu hedeflerle aynı ana fikirde olan reformlar da bundan 100 yıl önce Türkiye’nin kurucu lideri Atatürk tarafından başlatılmıştı.

Yarışmaya makale kategorisinde katıldım ve yazımın konusu Atatürk’ün Cumhuriyetin ilk 10 yılındaki reformları ile Birleşmiş Milletler’in 2030 için 17 hedefinin karşılaştırılmasıydı.

Birleşmiş Milletler’in açlığın sona erdirilmesi, cinsiyet eşitliği, suya erişim gibi 17 hedefi var.

Bu hedeflerin insanlık için ne kadar önemli olduğunu hepimiz biliyoruz.

Özellikle Atatürk ve çevre odaklı seçtiğim konu ilgimi çekti ve yazarken Atatürk’ün ne kadar ileri görüşlü bir lider olduğunu gördüm. Yazımda benzerlikleri vurgulamak için çok sayıda örnek vermeye çalıştım.

Birleşmiş Milletler’in 2015 yılında belirlediği 17 hedefin, Atatürk’ün önderliğinde neredeyse 100 yıl önce ülkemizde hayata geçirildiğini fark ettim.

Umarım yazdıklarım, Atatürk gibi bir lidere ve dünyaya yardım etmek isteyen iyi insanlara sahip olduğumuz için ne kadar şanslı olduğumuzun daha fazla farkına varmalarına yardımcı olur.

Umarım bu yazım toplumda çevre bilincini geliştirir ve Atatürk gibi değerli bir lidere sahip olmanın mutluluğunu bir kez daha yaşamamıza vesile olur.

My name is Muhammet Ali Turan. I am from Turkey. I am seventeen years old, and an 11th-grade high school student at Şehit Velit Bekdaş Anatolian high school. I have two big brothers. I am living with my parents in Ankara. I always try to participate in projects that aim to make the world a better place. Last year, I went to France for an Erasmus+funded project called “Our Common Future”, which aims to educate us about a sustainable environment and its importance. I want to be a part of this event because it has so much potential to achieve the things I want to achieve.
