[LMGlobal.Org] Dr. Serdar Savaş is an expert in personalized medicine and a pioneer in the field of genome-based information in preventive medicine and the founder of Gentest in 2004, which is aninstitute that works on public health genomics. He also discusses various topics related to healthand is discussing this in an interview for World Health Day 2023.
Dr. Savaş stresses the need for a shift towards preventive measures rather than focusing mainly on treating diseases, but mainly diseases that account for deaths. Dr. Savas emphasizes the need for a participatory practice where people/individuals are empowered to make decisions about their health and further the importance of nutrition plans based on an individual’s genetic infrastructure to maintain a healthy lifestyle and prevent diseases. Additionally, he discusses the role of the World Health Organization in promoting global health and serving vulnerable populations.
The virtual interview features Dr. Serdar Savas communicating about his experience as a consultant and a board member for the World Health Organization, including his work on developing health policies and systems in Eastern Europe areas. He also talks about his involvement with NGOs, the relationship between genetics and COVID-19, and how it could be possible to identify individuals who are more prone to developing severe cases of the disease. DNA testing and its role in making informed life decisions are discussed as well.
According to Dr. Savaş, his approach to implementing gene tests and the 7K Medicine Model (Personalized, Predictive, Preventive, Comprehensive, Precise, Evidence-based, and Participatory medicine—words that all begin with ‘K’ in Turkish–), can be successful in protecting people from diseases, rather than relying on the “disease industry” for treatments due to their system taking a very long time to change because of political reasons.
Dr. Savaş hopes that people will understand the significance of making necessary decisions and steps before disease develops, and emphasizes the importance of spreading this knowledge to all communities over the world.
